Top 10 Tuesday: My Favorite Film Books

by TheHappyKnife on Apr.27, 2010, under Features, Top 10 Tuesday

It’s been a little while since I have attended to my dear little film blog, so now I’m feeling a bit like a deadbeat dad. Celluloid Burning started off as a labor of love so I figured, for this week, it would be best to get back to basics and write about things that hit close to home.

This week’s list is all about the books I love. Some are dog-eared with well-worn pages and creased spines. Others are lovingly preserved in mint condition. All of them are fun, entertaining, and insightful and all for wildly different reasons.

First Trailer for John Woo co-directed Reign of Assassins

by TheMcGuffin on Apr.22, 2010, under Top Stories

Michelle Yeoh starts in this John Woo co-directed martial arts film… which happens to carry heavy whiffs of Crouch Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The other half of the directing (and writing) is done by Su Chao-Pin. It’s difficult to know where Woo ends and Su begins but the trailer below is intriguing. The film looks a lot less homoerotic than Woo’s usual body of work which leads one to believe that Woo has inserting himself as co-director in name alone to give the film the best chance of success.

Joss Whedon to direct Marvel’s Avengers

by TheMcGuffin on Apr.14, 2010, under Top Stories

I just about spit out my morning coffee when I read that Joss Whendon is in final negotiations to direct the Avenges movie. For those of you not in the know, ever since Marvel has taken over the production of movies based on their signature characters they have been locking the stars of said movies (Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Nick Fury) into long term contracts that tie them all into an all star Avengers movie. So Robert Downey Jr, Samuel Jackson and others will all be sharing the screen together.

Now Joss Whedon at the helm of an Avengers movie is both surprising and inspiring. Whedon, long known for his TV work (Buffy, Angel, Firefly), only has one film directing credit to his name but for anyone who has seen Serenity knows that Whedon can write witty dialogue and balance a huge ensemble cast. Whedon is a huge comic book geek, having written numerous well reviewed and successful arcs for various Marvel properties.

Let’s all cross our fingers and hope for the best.

Newer New Ong Bak 3 Trailer

by TheMcGuffin on Apr.12, 2010, under Top Stories

A newer Ong Bak 3 trailer has been released into the wild, this time highlighting more of the story (if there really is one). From what I have gleamed on other sites, in this installment Tony Jaa’s character has been captured and tortured. Every single bone in his body has been broken and he is some how healed and made into an even better figher (I think they filled him with adamantium or some shit like that).

Clash of the Titans (in 60 seconds)

by TheHappyKnife on Apr.06, 2010, under Top Stories

In the same vein as last week’s post about saving money at the movie theater, here is Shyaporn’s latest Youtube clip Clash of the Titans (in 60 seconds).

Note: Clash of the Titans was better than I expected, but I was bracing myself for a cinematic atrocity a la Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. It’s entertaining enough, but it’s doubtful as to whether or not it is worth the inflated 3D ticket prices. Catch a cheap 2D matinee and bring a flask. If you have a sip each time the film butchers classical Greek mythology, you should have a pretty decent outing.
